  1. Rule 1: order matters

  3. Rule 2: understand "95%" claims
  4. Rule 3: flag ingredients for sensitive skin
  5. Rule 4: if there is no INCI list, do not buy

Rule 1: order matters

Ingredients are listed roughly from highest to lowest concentration (ingredients under about 1% can appear in any order at the end). In a good cactus gel, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract should be first or very near the top.

A real example

Here is the published ingredient list of a widely sold Korean cactus soothing gel (YADAH Cactus Soothing Gel, as listed by Olive Young US):

Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Water, Butylene Glycol, Carbomer, Arginine, Allantoin, Hydroxyacetophenone, Caprylyl Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Panthenol, Disodium EDTA

Let us decode it:

IngredientWhat it does
Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem ExtractThe cactus extract; main hydrating base
1,2-HexanediolHumectant that also boosts preservation
GlycerinClassic humectant; draws water into the skin's surface
WaterSolvent
Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene GlycolHumectants and texture helpers
CarbomerThickener; creates the gel
ArginineNeutralises the carbomer to set pH and texture
AllantoinSkin-conditioning, commonly used for comfort
Hydroxyacetophenone, Caprylyl GlycolAntioxidant / preservative boosters
Dipotassium GlycyrrhizateLicorice-derived soothing agent
PanthenolPro-vitamin B5, skin conditioning
Disodium EDTAChelator that helps stability

Nothing unusual here: a cactus base, humectants, a gel system and a preservation system. Ingredient lists can change, so always check the current packaging.

Rule 2: understand "95%" claims

"95% cactus extract" usually refers to the extract as supplied, which is largely plant water. It is a fair marketing claim, but it does not mean the gel is 95% concentrated "actives".

Rule 3: flag ingredients for sensitive skin

Rule 4: if there is no INCI list, do not buy

On marketplaces, look for a photo of the back of the pack. No list, or a list that does not match the product name, is a reason to move on. More tips in our AliExpress checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cactus gel contain preservatives?

Water-based gels can grow bacteria and mould. Preservatives keep them safe for months of use. A gel with no preservation system is riskier, not safer.

What does INCI mean?

International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, the standardised naming system used on cosmetic labels.

Is carbomer bad for skin?

Carbomer is a common thickener used in many gels and is generally considered low risk. It is what gives a soothing gel its jelly texture.
